Approaching the quadrennial

My spirit swells with pride

Thinking of the athletes

And those guys with rocks who slide

I love to spend my winter evenings

Tuning in and rooting

Seeing skiers jumping

And some other skiers shooting

And though I was a goalie

As a skater, I’m a klutz

Still, I like to watch when someone

Lands a double Lutz

The thrill of every victory

As rivalries take shape

The agony of knowing that

I’m watching it on tape

Then when the games are over

How I wish they’d lasted longer

Inspired as I am by thinking

Faster, Higher, Stronger!

But this year, something’s different

The games have lost their fizz

And I’ve spent some time now thinking

Just what that something is

The contestants are as plucky

As any I’ve perused

So what is it that’s not that same

I’m very much confused

Now when I was a lad

There was this bully, don’t you know

Who liked to knock us down

And rub our faces in the snow

That wasn’t very pleasant

And this is quite revealing

The way I felt back then

Is very like the way I’m feeling

So though I’d love to see just how

The networks spew their spin

Forgive me when I say that

I will not be tuning in
