Once a year, our leadership
All gather in communion
To hear the President address
The State of our great union
I’m starting to imagine how
The room will look that night
Will the Squad be wearing black
Or will they dress in white?
And as the pundits gather
To assess their grief and gripes
They’ll say some in attendance
Might soon be wearing stripes
It’s sure to put the Congress’
Decorum to the test
The atmospherics awkward
Let’s say, delicate at best
So getting out ahead
Of where the Twitterverse is trending
I looked back to the last address
With impeachment pending
The Star Report on Clinton
Set off anger and dissention
But in the speech he gave that year
It didn’t get a mention
And you can look it up
But please believe be for the nonce
It hardly got a nod
In the Republican response
As if to breath these articles
Was boorish and heretical
All references in coverage
Were strictly parenthetical
So I predict that Trump’s address
Will trigger no hostility
The evening will be noted
For politeness and civility
But I bet on the Browns this year
So much for credibility
