To prevent all misconstruction.
To restrict abuse of powers
A list of rights was drafted
Not the government’s; but ours.

They knew a tyrant’s edicts
Could be erring and vindictive
And so, they crafted clauses
Both instructive and restrictive

The Brand New Constitution
After vigorous debates
Saw significant improvement
As amended by the States

The first of these adopted
By the wise, but infant nation,
Made it clear the people valued
Freedom as foundation

Freedom to assemble
Free to pray and of the press
When beset by grievances
To seek for their redress

No mere words on paper
But provisions fundamental
As our impetus to greatness
Absolutely instrumental

But my freedom to assemble
Is aggressively curtailed
And when I speak what’s on my mind
I’m piously assailed

I’m piling up my grievances
As fast as I can make them
But thanks to those in government
I have nowhere to take them

The press was deemed essential
But much to my frustration
No one is reporting
They’re just taking dictation

I cannot go to worship;
The governors have spoken
And I know shouldn’t break the law
But the law’s already broken
