I’ve lived a lot of years
And though I’d never want to miss one
I didn’t expect, in all my life
To see a year like this one

History, I used to think
Was read about in books
But now, alas, I’ve had a glimpse
Of how it really looks

I’d never seen a global war
Or carnage—on this scale
Reason reeling in retreat
While hotter heads prevail

Chaos in the country
And riots in the city
If this is living history
It isn’t very pretty

The enemy oppressing us
Is tricky to resist
We want to join the fighting
But there’s nowhere to enlist

I’m glad that I survived it
The same for you, my friend
But this sums up my thinking as
December’s near its end

Some are glad it’s over
I’m afraid it’s just beginning
It’s not a stretch to say
At best, we’re in the seventh inning

You can’t sit on the sidelines
When it’s time to take the field
Rally your commitment
Make sure your spirit’s steeled

You’ve heard, perhaps the message
That your day is not complete
Unless you take sufficient time
To love and pray and eat

But should you want to shape the place
This world is coming to
I suggest you’re better off to
Think and plan and do
