Was it Halley’s Comet
That set the sky aglow
In Royal David’s city
Two thousand years ago?

Some believe the omen
That the augurs were decoding
Was the flash of incandescence
From some distant star exploding

Other say the rarity
Which gave the night its aura
Was a singular, phenomenal
Sub-boreal aurora

This week has been significant
For those who see a pattern
In the very rare convergences
Of Jupiter and Saturn

Whatever the alignment
It’s said some sages saw it
They jumped up on their camels
And they made a b-line for it

After meeting Herod
Their determination doubled
They had a dream of angels
And Jerusalem was troubled

What happened in the heavens
On that night so long ago
Isn’t as important
As what happened here below

For unto us was given
As the holy chorus thunders
A father for forever
And a counselor of wonders

To see the light of justice
Was the mission for those sages
The sovereign of peacefulness
A hero for the ages
And even at this hour
All people who are wise
Can see him in their hearts
As they saw him in the skies
