Perhaps I’m just too young to know

Or too old to remember

How issues came in focus

As we moved into November

Should we be in the businesses

Of every foreign nation

Or focus on the benefits

Of splendid isolation

Should we resist the dominoes

As they remake the map

Or verify and then confront

The growing missile gap

The networks named the issues

And so we could assess them

Posed questions for the candidates

And forced them to address them

But news of our elections now

Is only about polling

Just between the two of us

I’d rather watch pro bowling

Or maybe they’re reporting

On some statement that was rotten

Remembered as an outrage

That for four years was forgotten

The papers and the networks

Have put us in this pickle–

All they have is clickbait

And It isn’t worth a nickel

They’ve lost a lot of backbone

Forgotten how to show one-

So much so that the LA Times

This year endorses—no one

Another thing about this race

That elevates my hackles

Is how the current President

Thinks Trump should be in shackles

And how, at every question

The current runner cackles

Still, with the finest pollsters

And some pundits to advise me

Because it’s still October

Nothing would surprise me
