I know a loving woman
And she loves her loving man
Then cancer came between them
As only cancer can

On heaven’s grace and blessing
They have a strong reliance
But here on terra firma
They put their faith in science

A chemo course was ordered
To offer up resistance
But starting it has been postponed
Because of social distance

My wife’s friend has a sister
Whose heart was compromised
A valve needed replacement
A procedure was advised

They followed all the protocols
And surgery was planned
Until the science told them that
Her surgery was banned

It seemed that they would have to wait
Until the shutdowns cease
Alas, it’s with a heavy heart
I say she rests in peace

The oath that all physicians take
Is first to do no harm
I know I’m not the only one
To raise a loud alarm

But Governors must understand
Their calls are consequential
Each time that they determine
Which people are essential

Consider, in the policies
You’re righteously pursuing,
The quiet repercussions of
The damage that you’re doing

All of life is precious
And all men are our brothers
Don’t tell me some afflicted are
More valuable than others
