I was minding my own business
At a nice sidewalk café
I ordered the Eggs Benedict
Like every other day

When suddenly a group appeared
They carried signs and banners
A girl pushed towards my table
(no one taught her any manners)

She said their chants and slogans
Were a symbol of defiance
And asked me for a gesture
That would signal my compliance

I guess that I was caught off guard
I didn’t know what to do
But as far as gestures go
I thought of one or two

I considered my responses
Cause I really don’t like pain
Should I act like Mr. Rodgers
Or a bit more like John Wayne

There was no way to advance my cause
And nowhere to retreat
So, I handed her a menu
And I offered her a seat

I said don’t order twenty
Cause the hollandaise is runny
I’m guessing from what happened next
She didn’t think that was funny

They want to make you angry
And they want to see you frightened
It’s just their way of showing
They’re progressive and enlightened

Don’t let them have the upper hand
Don’t let push come to shove
Smile by the grace of God
And wish them peace and love

It’s important that we be prepared
To keep things calm and steady
Yes, the odds are it won’t happen
But it’s better to be ready
