The weather’s getting warmer

And the candidates are swarming

Summer’s hardly here

And the field’s already forming

All across the media

Republicans are rumbling

While Twitter has the video

Of the incumbent stumbling

Of the titles in the ring

Governor’s the most

But we also have a Senator

And a talk show host

Vice Presidents, Ambassadors

Who claim they’re calm and steady

They mean to show the public that

They’re rested and they’re ready

Most have made announcements

But others may be waiting

They better get a move on

For soon they’ll be debating

Televised debates

Tell us what candidates are thinkin’

Without any resemblance

To Douglas versus Lincoln

Today’s debates need referees

To moderate and marshal

Someone who’s like Switzerland

Modest and impartial

An even-handed format

Seen in past debates so rarely

To make sure every speaker’s time

Is allocated fairly

Perhaps a tone or buzzer

(The idea needs some tweaking)

A way to tell the candidates

That they should now stop speaking

Will they reach agreement?

Only time will tell

But it’s going to be important

Whose finger’s on that bell.
