Some years ago, I wrote a poem about how it felt to be 30 years old. It didn’t feel much different, I thought, than being 13.
Thoughts at Age 30
I am the same age that I have always been
A flash of fading light to live in
Experience fixed by memory’s pin
I am the same age that I have always been
A few years later, I reflected on what it felt like to be turning 50.
As you can see, my thoughts had not changed much.
Thoughts at Age 50
I am the same age that I have always been
A flash of fading light to live in
Experience fixed by memory’s pin
I am the same age that I have always been
And now….
Thoughts at 65
My kidney’s weak
My heart shivers
I’m on the waiting list for livers
I squeak each time I bend my knees
Once a week I lose my keys
I can’t hear when my wife is callin’
My scores on Jeopardy have fallen
No hour breaks without a yawn
I yell at kids who cross my lawn
My resume is full of ills
My cabinet is full of pills
I lose more often than I win
But I am the same age that I have always been
