At last, I’ve come to understand
(A sentence worth the stating)
In every aspect of our lives,
We are a people, waiting
We stand in line to travel
And for a cup of Joe
We plant a seed and count the weeks
To see the seedling grow
The game is on at five o’clock
And still, it’s only three
Can you all hear the tick and tock
Or is it only me?
We wait nine months until we’re born
Can’t wait until we’ve grown
Complete anticipation
Is the only state we’ve known
We wait for beds to open
The nurse to make her rounds
Living in the moment’s not
As simple as it sounds
We look for our reflection
Just as the mirror shatters
Time is life’s most precious gem
The only one that matters
We wait for the Messiah
Who says, “Please wait again.”
As yearly we’re reminded
When we wish good will to men
We know the apprehension
Of every rising sun
Always there’s a question
Will this day be the one?
We’re sailing toward tomorrow
Just hold that tiller steady
We’re very good at waiting
It’s time for getting ready
