You may not be a Catholic

But you know confession’s role

I’m sure you must have heard

That it does wonders for the soul

It seals an open wound

Just like a surgeon with a suture

It puts away the past

So you can face a brighter future

But lest you think confessing

Is a game that can be played

It isn’t quite enough to say,

“I guess mistakes were made.”

One shouldn’t begin confession

Rather insincerely, should one

So here are three components

If you want to make a good one

Acknowledging your sin–

That’s the way you make a start

Saying what you did

In each particular and part

The second step is sorrow

(I think I’ve got that right)

It doesn’t mean a thing

Unless you really are contrite

And this is more important

Than all that’s gone before

Saying with conviction

That you vow to sin no more

The New York Times has told us

(And it truly hurt my head)

They were guilty of misleading us

Because they were misled

That may fulfill part one

But clearly not parts three and two

It doesn’t sound like  penitence to me

Does it to you?
