We all have studied LIT-RAT-URE
Both basic and comparative
And understand our goal should be
To recognize the narrative

And if we paid attention
We gathered, did we not
The moral of a story
Is more than just the plot

It seems the same with politics
The story has a purpose
But everything that matters
Exists below the surface

In Portland they would have you think
Some building is beset
The courthouse is the target
And the narrative is met

The anger that’s encouraged by
The nightly chants and calls
Is aimed by righteous people
At some windows and some walls

Within those walls, however
As the constitution tells
Are the bastions of our liberty
And the place where justice dwells

Destruction of this edifice
By zealots or their “mothers”
Is not defense of freedom
It’s denying it to others

And even if it looks as though
The siege may soon be ended
Wherever Law is threatened
Its home must be defended

Burn down the halls of justice
To achieve what you pursue
And there won’t be any justice left
When power turns on you
