It was time to do some thinking
And I’ve given it a lot
Where to place the blame and burden
For the government we’ve got

One that has no time to govern
When it isn’t on vacation
Is too busy holding hearings
To consider legislation

One that soon a generation
Will their futures be entrusting
While the present state of cities
Is quite arguably disgusting

Could it be the politicians
Are the ones to take the rap
When they promise us a banquet
And too often serve us pap

Or perhaps it’s the reporters
Who prefer to preen and scold
Who, instead of good reporting
Read exactly what they’re told

No, the source of all our sorrows
Who I now toss ‘neath the bus
The single guilty party
Undeniably is us

We’ve accepted second raters
Who routinely drop the ball
Meekly giving up and grumbling,
“Well, you can’t fight city hall.”

We were told that those who govern
Were the brightest and the best
But since they’re the ones who told us
Why should we believe the rest?

You can disagree completely
From my thesis, stand aloof
But as evidence I offer
That last debate as proof

Finally, after all my thinking
The answer couldn’t be clearer
Next time I point the finger
I’ll be looking in the mirror
