(You may remember that Dennis used to introduce his radio program as

“A show where we talk about everything…except poetry.”  That, we will overlook.)

He is no friend of poetry

But still a friend of mine

For I’ve been tuning in…

Well, since “Religion on the Line”

And in a world of conflict

Of arguments and yelling

Who’d think that calm reflection

Could be so darn compelling?

He’s guided us through concepts

Both simple and mysterious

That males are not like females

And happiness is serious

He’s pondered theses from the East

And values from the West

And leaves no doubt in listeners

Of those he thinks the best

And like the best professors

He’s often quite demanding

Though not to force agreement

But, rather, understanding

Then came a moment unforeseen

And Fate has laid him low

We’ve learned for weeks and weeks on end

How it was “touch and go”

Silenced by a sudden fall

It seemed to us absurd

Some stood, some bowed, some knelt

But, friends, we all put in a word

Can he feel the waves of praying?

Well, if I had to guess

I’d think, then think a second time

And always answer, “Yes.”

And we’ll continue praying

We’ve made that act our choice

Until again we’re tuning in

To hear his friendly voice
