I don’t like to ask for anything
I’ve never found it fun
Even when I’m praying
I just say “Thy will be done”
But here’s a twist on scripture
I think we all believe
If you never ask
Then it’s unlikely you’ll receive
It follows even pundits
And sophisticated sages
Have to ask their publishers
To run opinion pages
I’ve written epic verses
For years with little rest
And so I have just one request
I’m getting off my chest
I graduated high school
Some 50 years ago
There is this big reunion thing
I think I have to go
I haven’t won the Stanley Cup
There’s been no Nobel Prize
I need a little something
To impress those high school guys
There is this one position
And I hear it’s time for hiring
We have a Poet Laureate
Whose two-year term’s expiring
I think I could be useful
I think you’ll all agree
So if you know the President
Put in a word for me
There, I’ve made my little pitch
That’s all I’m going to say
And as for that reunion
Could we get this done by May?
