Did we think it would be easy?

Did we think it would be nice?

Did we think we’d take stand

And that there wouldn’t be a price

Is it easier to grapple with

The massive debt that’s owed

Or to take the nation’s can

And kick it further down the road

Did we think they would resign

Or just politely go away

Didn’t we know each time we stumbled

They’d be out there making hay

The problems in our lives

Confirm there are no easy fixes

Food for thought shouldn’t be consumed

From ultra-processed mixes

Election day was crucial

As was election night

But that was not the end

Just the beginning of the fight

Is your spirit made of straw

Or is your spirit made of sticks

With the way the wind is blowing

Better find a house of bricks

Did we think it would be pleasant

Did we think it would be fun

There are miles filled with pain

Each time a marathon is run

But if I ever ran one

I bet it would be stunning

And the contest that we’re in

Is sure a race that’s worth the running
