I know some folks who love the law

And really I don’t mind it

Because they are enamored of

The law the way they find it

For them it’s a profession

Not a job or hobby

And they can quote you statutes

From the Code of Hammurabi

Of skilled interpretation,

They are devoted students

Respectful to the legacy

Of careful jurisprudence.

But our system has a problem

And one that’s plain to see

From those who treat the law

The way they want the laws to be

Judges who find powers

Or rights that they’ve created

Where nowhere in the canon

Are these rights enumerated

Next among the wanting

And here, there’s no dispute

Are prosecutors who decide

What they will prosecute

Block a major highway

That’s just inconvenient

Everyone can rest assured

The DA will be lenient

Prison for defacing

That would be enslavement

But shackles for the guy

Who hits the brakes on rainbow pavement

Dismantle all the prisons

Disconnect the chair

All we want’s a system

We can all agree is fair
