We need a lot of pennies
And we just don’t have enough
It costs a lot to make them
Cause they’re made of copper stuff
I guess you’ve seen the numbers
And they aren’t really fun
It takes three cents to make a coin
Whose worth is only one
Some say the coin is useless
And minting is a chore
And no one in the land
Makes penny candies anymore
They argue that they have a plan
To pluck us from this pickle
They’ll do away with pennies
And they’ll round up to a nickel
But in today’s economy
Inflation is on fire
And I, for one, refuse to pay
A single penny higher
Charities love pennies
They come in big donations
And no one wants the government
Engaged in confiscations
For every house has got a hoard
I know because I do
And, if you’re being honest,
I bet you have one too.
Now here is where I share my plan
For every jar and coffee can
This year on Lincoln’s birthday,
Please promise not to laugh
The mint will buy your pennies
For a penny and a half
The penny shortage has been solved
The cost is cut in two
This is the kind of thinking that
Savants and poets do
