Put Me In, Coach

As the current football seasons

Were expectantly approaching

I pondered if success

Was due to players or to coaching

Does landing at the top of

Of all the standings and divisions

Depend upon the outcome of

Performance or decisions

The question’s as perplexing

As the chicken or the egg

(Though you’ll never kick a field goal

If you haven’t got the leg)

And note that on the field

Is not where all the coaching’s done

You’ve got to draft the player

Who can make that fourth and one

In considering the issue

This quotation has arisen

“He’d take his’n and beat yours’n

Then take yours’n and beat his’n”

I rarely make conclusions

Based on such a tiny sample

But if I were to pick

Based on the Giants, for example

I’d say that coaching’s paramount

Or if I’m feeling sporty

You’ll have to recognize

That at least, it’s 60/40

You can have every advantage

But still take it on the chin

Without the proper leadership

You’re never gonna win

What point am I now making based on

Metaphoric rambles

That’s why Florida’s successful

And California is in shambles

Commission a poem from Joe

Tell him the story. He'll find the verse in it.
