I’m Serious

(I’m introducing myself to the new afternoon audience and making a serious proposal:

Poets have a duty

As this poet’s often said

To see the world around them

From inside another’s head

To question all assumptions

And to challenge every truth

Which helps us do our duty

Which you know is saying sooth

And I attempt each Friday

Just within this broadcast hour

To practice my vocation

Which is speaking sooth to power

Some topics I’ll explore in depth

Sometimes my views are cursory

I’ll pen an ode to holidays

Or note an anniversary

I’ll celebrate a champion

And raise a loving cup

Make some bad predictions

(Yeah, you can look those up)

This week my world was burning

And some parts are burning still

At night, our sky was orange

From the fire on the hill

We’ll have investigations

And results will be the same

Everyone is guilty

But no one is to blame

And then there’s the rebuilding

Through all of the red tape

A tangled route of tentacles

From which there’s no escape

I’ve looked all the issues

And here is my discovery

The Donald should make Kamala

The czar of our recovery

Then he and Gavin Newsom

Never have to chat

There’s nothing in this county more

Bipartisan than that

Commission a poem from Joe

Tell him the story. He'll find the verse in it.
