If I Knew Then…

The pundits push the candidates
And ask them to avow
That they would do things dif’rently
In light of what’s known now

I hate such hypotheticals
They simply show no class
And arguing from hindsight
Is curious and crass.

There’s no one on the planet
Today or years ago
Who wouldn’t reconsider
When told what now we know

We all would do things otherwise
If given half a chance
From Little Joe the Poet
To the Emperor of France

He wouldn’t have led his forces
To lands both high and hinter
He’s say, “Let’s go to Portugal
It’s nice there in the winter.”

Custer wouldn’t have rushed his men
Ahead to face disaster
He would have stayed with Mrs. C
And hap’ly played Canasta

Adam wouldn’t have dined with Eve
(Oh what a big mistake!)
Instead of eating apple pie
They would have ordered snake

Lincoln would have stayed at home
Now wouldn’t that have been groovy?
“Mary, dear, why don’t we wait
Until they make the movie?”

Considering my marriage
If I knew what I’d get
I would have asked if she’s be mine
The day that we first met

So if you missed my message
I’ll say it once again
Ask what they’d do right here and now
Not what they wouldn’t do then
