February 13th (or… Is Anybody Buying This?)

Calendars are useful

To mark the times and seasons

To plan for festive holy days

And many other reasons

But there are dates we contemplate

Which pop up during the year

Only known and notable

For generating fear

The first and foremost morning

Recognized by all of you

Is the fourteenth day of April

As the tax is coming due

Christmas Eve is next in line

I’d say without a doubt

For those behind in shopping

Know their time is running out

The next feast is more movable

(Unlike Arbor Day or Earth Day)

It’s the day before the dawning
Of your spouse (or mother’s) birthday

And then there is today, my friends

Especially for men

The Vigil of Saint Valentine

Snuck up on us again

The blooms are stale or wilted

Candy’s late or lost

Jewelry is apropos

But, oh, at such a cost

A dinner date might save you

And generate ovations

But that special place she likes to go--

Fresh out of reservations

There’s only one left to do

It works because I’ve seen it

Tell her you’re in love with her

And say it like you mean it

Commission a poem from Joe

Tell him the story. He'll find the verse in it.
