Constitution Day

Not too far in the future

A week from Tuesday next

Will mark a special moment

For an influential text

They’d won a war for freedom

The northern and the southern

And now they had to show the world

They had the skills to govern

From May until September

They met and talked and crafted

A plan to form a union

Which select committees drafted

It came about through compromise

And surely had some flaws

But did something remarkable–

It framed liberty with laws

The rule of “We the People”

With monarchies contrasted

But through care and amendment

No plan has longer-lasted

Some smart guys (most with tenure)

Use Op-eds now to state

The Constitution’s dangerous

And clearly out-of-date

And though through jurisprudence

The marvel has been polished

It’s lived beyond its usefulness

And ought to be demolished

I’ve often seen a pundit

Even quite a skilled one

Tear down an institution

But it’s rare to see them build one

But let’s see what you have in mind

Every word and letter

You say you have the answers

Show me something better

Commission a poem from Joe

Tell him the story. He'll find the verse in it.
