Ballroom History

Through Washington’s most storied home,

Wherein the ghosts of purpose roam

I hear First Ladies, fine and fair

Take note of changes in the air

The walls of their beloved mansion

Reverberate with new expansion

Abigail is first to speak

(She barely lived there for a week)

Perhaps the building’s finest spouse

She fought with an unfinished house

“I think we all deserve a new room

I hung my laundry in the Blue Room”

Now listen to beloved Bess,

“When I lived there it was a mess

With renovation incomplete

We had to move across the street”

And Lady Bird, she beams with pride

To see the building beautified

“The critics are all false and phony”

Says Dolly M. (who served spumoni)

Even Jill has time to vent

“When I ran things, we pitched a tent

And those things cost a lot to rent.”

They all agree, by gosh, by God

There goes a smiling Mary Todd

“This is the room the old barn needed

With it, the South wouldn’t have seceded

I know that Edith Wilson thinks

A ballroom would be fun

But she didn’t have time to comment

There’s a government to run

From those who pulled down statues

Never Trumpers and the Squad

I find it so amazing

That they weep for a facade

Commission a poem from Joe

Tell him the story. He'll find the verse in it.
