I’ve heard a lot of pundits
And none have spoken truer:
“The red states just got redder
And the blue states just got bluer”

And if that revelation
Serves to cause you any pain
I understand the feeling
It just goes against the grain

We’d rather work in concert
And wouldn’t you be excited
If, on a single issue
The country was united

Our hearts persist in yearning
That most folks can be persuaded
And feel the disappointment
Every time that hope has faded

But if you take a moment
To reflect on our divide
You’ll see its far more frequent
That the red and blue collide

Our history has seen its share
Of vigorous debates
And there was that little business of
The War Between the States

We disagreed on getting caught
In European fights
The coinage and the currency;
The quest for civil rights

And even in our triumphs
We rarely sang in tune
We barely got the funding
To send NASA to the moon

So don’t be disappointed
When you see a great divide
Compromise can be a most
Uncomfortable ride

And after the election
I’d be happy, wouldn’t you
If 51% was red
And 49 was blue
