If you’ve just read the Daily News
You’re probably aware
Its editors are skeptical
And don’t think much of prayer

They’ve had enough of platitudes
Of homilies and preaching
And say they’ll gladly do without
So much of this beseeching

The quiet moment when a soul
Asks God to help another
Is clearly inefficient
So forget about it, brother.

And though they like to criticize
When other folks get preachy
They’ve climbed in to the pulpit
And, by God, their pushing Nietzsche

Progressives also offer prayers
You’ve heard it and you’ve seen it
The Daily News must understand
That they don’t really mean it.

Behind the scenes they laugh a lot
Oh you should hear the zingers
They hurl at the believers
And the prayers and the clingers.

They think the act of prayer itself
A futile, vain endeavor
While clearly to the rest of us
We need more prayer than ever

Now, if you’ve thought about these things
You’ve likely heard the saying
God, by prayer, may not be changed
But change comes to those praying

Prayer cannot be measured
By good fortune, health, or wealth
The value of the prayer
Is in the act of prayer itself

Back when I leaned Catechism
Lesson number two
Was, “Prayer is when you talk to God”
In grace, he talks to you.

The thing about this whole affair
The Daily News is missin’
You’ll never hear the Word of God
Unless you stop to listen
