All around the Beltway
(And out in the Old Dominion)
Prominent attorneys
Have been asked for an opinion

The question posed to all of them
From Dershowicz to Darden
“Are there limitations on
The Power of the Pardon?”

When the Founders constituted
How to run this nation
Can they have been contemplating
Self-exoneration?

I’ve never been a lawyer
I don’t play one on TV
But there’s another issue
That’s, if you’re asking me

Reports say some officials
Are now looking for immunity
For actions during the LAST regime
They authored with impunity

They circumvented sanctions
With indifference depraver
Than the banks, which in good conscience
Wouldn’t entertain the waiver

Some DOJ appointees
Burnt their candles at both ends
To incarcerate their enemies
And go easy on their friends

Now I wouldn’t bet the 401
Or funds of your dependents
But prosecutors could wind up
On trial as defendants

And even though he said he can’t
Experience has shown
Much can be accomplished
With a pen and with a phone

I’m thinking in a day or so
Unless my guess I miss
The question they’ll be asking
Will undoubtedly be this:

Is the POTUS’ pardon power
In perpetuum exacto
Can Obama pardon them
And can he do it ex post facto?
