Are you now or have you ever been
A person who might pray
Do you feel a higher purpose
At the breaking of each day

Do you thank a greater power
For the beauties that astound you
And acknowledge your good fortune
In the people that surround you

Are you now or have you ever been
A student growing strong
Looking for some guidance
That can show you right from wrong

Did you listen to your teachers
Did you listen to your heart
And follow both directives
Toward God or law or art

Did you don a mentor’s mantle
At the place where life had brought you
And share with other seekers
What your favorite teachers taught you

Are you now or have you ever been
Assigned a parent’s role
Entrusted by the hand of fate
To raise souls hale and whole

Did you shelter them from evil
Did you free them to explore
Did you give them all you thought you had
Then find that you had more

Are you now or have you ever been
At the center of the storm
Where relentless winds beset you
And demand that you conform

Did you rise above your worries
And not succumb to theirs
By the calm and understanding
That comes with those daily prayers

When the answers to these questions
Are all dutifully discussed
Then I think we have a Justice
Whose judgement we can trust
